Statements by Sartono and Suyono, Vice-Chairmen of the Supreme Advisory Council [DPA], condemn the September 30th Movement and express willingness to help the President seek a political solution. Radio Republik Indonesia broadcast on the 8th that Coordinating Minister and First Vice-Chairman of the Supreme Advisory Council Sartono, LL.B. [Sartono, S.H.], and Second Vice-Chairman Dr Suyono Hadinoto [Dr Soejono Hadinoto? – name uncertain], on behalf of all members of the Secretariat of the Supreme Advisory Council, congratulated President Sukarno on his health and safety, and congratulated Coordinating Minister General Nasution on having escaped the disaster of the terrorist action of the "September 30th Movement". At the same time they condemned the coup attempt by the terrorists of the "September 30th Movement", who had formed a "Revolutionary Council", and the killing of six senior army generals and one officer. They expressed condolences on the sacrifice of the seven revolutionary heroes, and at the same time supported the President's order to restore a calm and orderly atmosphere, to help the President take action against individuals and other parties involved in the "September 30th Movement" and to help the President achieve a political solution. They resolved to strengthen unity, to continue to defend the revolution and to be forever loyal to President Sukarno. Statement by Sudibyo [Soedibjo], Secretary-General of the Indonesian National Front: calls for avoiding all armed conflict, and says September 30th Movement elements will be cleared out of the National Front. Radio Republik Indonesia broadcast on the 3rd that Sudibyo, Secretary-General of the Indonesian National Front, appealed to all members of the National Front of Indonesia always to take progressive revolutionary action. He instructed them to avoid all armed conflict, to safeguard national unity and to raise national vigilance. Radio Republik Indonesia broadcast on the 10th that Sudibyo, Secretary-General of the National Front, on the 9th held a meeting with the various branches of the National Front in the Jakarta area and Central Java. At the meeting he explained the decisions of the Central Committee of the National Front and called on them to follow and carry out Sukarno's instructions, to help the armed forces restore security and to create a calm and orderly atmosphere. He also demanded the strengthening of revolutionary defence forces in order to continue carrying out the two People's Mandates, to promote the smooth running of production and to protect the distribution of important materials and telecommunications facilities for the sake of social and economic stability. He called for raising vigilance and strengthening preparedness with the "Five Revolutionary Charms" [Panca Azimat Revolusi] in order to deal with imperialism and old and new colonialism, which were trying to split us. He stressed that September 30th Movement elements must be cleared out of the National Front. Two instructions from Interior Minister Sumarno [Soemarno] express resolve to eliminate, together with the armed forces, the September 30th Movement. Radio Republik Indonesia broadcast on the 2nd that Interior Minister Major-General Soemarno [Soemarno] issued instructions to all regional heads calling on them always to carry out their duties under the leadership of the great leader of the revolution, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and President Bung Karno [Pengarang: Sukarno], and to eliminate resolutely, together with the armed forces, all counter-revolutionary movements carried out by the "September 30th Movement". Radio Republik Indonesia broadcast on the 6th that Interior Minister Soemarno instructed administrative personnel in all regions to carry out resolutely the orders issued on 2 and 3 October 1965 by the President, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Great Leader of the Revolution Bung Karno. That is, constantly ... (reception unclear), to remain calm and maintain order, to do their utmost to avoid the possibility of armed conflict, to remain vigilant and step up preparations in carrying out the "two People's Mandates", to continue to carry out their respective original tasks and to preserve unity and solidarity. Two statements by the Indonesian National Party [PNI]: the first says it knew nothing about the Revolutionary Council of the September 30th Movement; the second says it will contribute to carrying out Sukarno's orders. Radio Republik Indonesia broadcast on the 3rd a statement of the Central Committee of the Indonesian National Party: since the names of leaders and members of the PNI – Marhaenist Front were included in the list of members of the so-called Revolutionary Council, the PNI Central Committee issued a statement saying it knew nothing about this and therefore bore no responsibility for the inclusion of the leaders and members of the PNI – Marhaenist Front in the list of members of the said council. For this reason the statement instructed all members of the PNI – Marhaenist Front to remain vigilant, not to be misled by the rumours, plots and threats of the counter-revolutionaries, and only to obey and abide by the instructions of the PNI Central Committee. Radio Republik Indonesia reported on the 8th that the PNI Central Committee and the Marhaenist movements under it had made their attitude clear on the so-called "September 30th Movement", concluding that the "September 30th Movement" was a coup attempt to seize the government and state power held by the President and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. The PNI instructed all members and sympathisers of the party and of all Marhaenist movements affiliated to it to contribute to carrying out every order issued by the President, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Great Leader of the Revolution and Father of the Marhaenists. Speech by Ali Sastroamidjojo [Ali Sastroamidjojo], General Chairman of the PNI: says the September 30th Movement is a "national problem"; expresses full help to the army in quelling the September 30th Movement. Radio Republik Indonesia broadcast on the evening of 13 October the radio speech of PNI General Chairman Ali Sastroamidjojo, as follows: "Brothers and sisters: Thanks be to God, I feel fortunate. I returned to the homeland a few days ago after leading the MPRS delegation on a visit to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the People's Republic of China. With deep feeling and calmness I have followed the events at home. After learning from the leading comrades of the PNI Central Committee – Marhaenist Front and the Marhaenist mass movements ... (reception unclear), I fully agree with the firm attitude of the PNI Central Committee – Marhaenist Front in condemning the 'September 30th Movement' as a counter-revolutionary adventure. Our attitude is clear: to fully help our Indonesian armed forces – the army – to quell this adventure and, in accordance with the President's directive of 3 October 1965, to create a calm and orderly atmosphere. For the PNI – Marhaenist Front, the question of the counter-revolutionary adventure of the 'September 30th Movement' is a national problem, ... (reception unclear), and therefore we have full confidence in the political solution of the President, the Great Leader of the Revolution Bung Karno. The PNI – Marhaenist Front has three basic principles in the face of any problem, namely: 1. Our leader Bung Karno as President, Great Leader of the Revolution, Supreme Commander and Father of the Marhaenists. 2. The basis of our revolution and ... (reception unclear) including the Five Revolutionary Charms. 3. ... (reception unclear) Marhaenism. The day before yesterday we had an audience with His Excellency President Sukarno at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, and on behalf of all members of the PNI – Marhaenist Front I conveyed to Bung Karno our deep sympathy and greetings, ... (reception unclear) his good health. Brothers and sisters: the President agreed with all our attitudes. I therefore call on all members of the PNI – Marhaenist Front to continue ... (reception unclear) our current policy, to continue to help the Indonesian armed forces – the army – to eliminate the counter-revolutionary adventure of the 'September 30th Movement'. (The rest is unclear.)" Statement of the Indonesian Party [Partindo]: its attitude towards the settlement of the September 30th affair is consistent with Sukarno's; it says it ignores the groundless slander against Partindo by certain people. The Antara news agency reported that the Central Committee of Partindo issued on 9 October a statement signed by its General Chairman Asmara Hadi [Asmara Hadi], the full text of which is as follows: "First, Partindo was neither involved in nor took part in the 'Event of 30 September 1965' in the slightest. Since its re-establishment on 1 August 1958, Partindo has had only one resolve, namely to realise all the teachings of Bung Karno. The party's attitude towards the settlement of the 'Event of 30 September 1965' is the same as and consistent with that of Bung Karno. Second, Bung Karno's instruction on raising national vigilance to deal with the threat of imperialism and old and new colonialism, which are preparing to attack Indonesia, as he reiterated at the plenary cabinet meeting on the two People's Mandates convened on 6 October 1965, is based on the standpoint of revolutionary national unity with Nasakom as its core and spirit, and Nasakom in turn is the essence of the Pancasila – the philosophy that is the basis of our unity and of the founding of the state. Third, revolutionary national unity and solidarity with Nasakom as its core and spirit can only be established if all factions are truly loyal to the Bogor Declaration. Fourth, therefore, to settle the 'Event of 30 September 1965' and to safeguard the revolution, threatened by imperialism and old and new colonialism, a calm atmosphere is absolutely necessary; people should not blame one another, resort to frenzied methods and provoke one another, nor take any action that could cause confusion among the people. Fifth, for this reason Partindo ignores the groundless slander and incitement directed by certain people against Partindo, its mass organisations, branches and members. Sixth, all members of Partindo's branches throughout the country and of its affiliated mass organisations have a duty to abide by and carry out this statement expressing the party's attitude." Joint statement of the Islamic Teachers' Federation [Nahdlatul Ulama] and its affiliated mass organisations: demands the early dissolution of the Indonesian Communist Party and the organisations connected with the September 30th Movement; demands the permanent banning of newspapers and periodicals directly or indirectly supporting the September 30th Movement. Radio Republik Indonesia broadcast on the 5th the statement issued by the Central Committee of the Islamic Teachers' Federation of Indonesia [NU] and its affiliated mass organisations, the full text of which is as follows: "Considering: 1. that on 1 October 1965 the Central Committee of the NU and its affiliated mass organisations issued a statement concerning the events launched by the 'September 30th Movement'; 2. that the evidence already in the hands of the responsible authorities proves that the counter-revolutionary group of the 'September 30th Movement' armed members of the People's Youth and of the Indonesian Public Works Union affiliated to the All-Indonesian Central Organisation of Trade Unions [SOBSI]; 3. that the facts provided by the responsible authorities show that members of the People's Youth and the Indonesian Women's Movement Association [Gerwani] were sent from distant places to Lubang Buaya in Jakarta for training. The six generals and one junior officer of the Indonesian National Army who later died in the barbarity of the 'September 30th Movement' were buried in a dried-up well at Lubang Buaya; 4. that the organ of the Indonesian Communist Party, Harian Rakjat [Harian Rakyat], not only widely publicised the activities of this counter-revolutionary movement but, through its editorials, cartoons and columns, expressed full support for this attempt to usurp the prerogatives of the President, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Great Leader of the Revolution; 5. that the clear stand shown in the several directives of the President, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Great Leader of the Revolution has the full support of all revolutionary forces in the country, which are dealing with the counter-revolutionary parties and mass organisations. Considering that, to ensure the victorious progress of the revolution, to realise the Five Revolutionary Charms and to satisfy the plaintive appeal of the people, all counter-revolutionary movements must be thoroughly eliminated, it is decided: 1. to request the President, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Indonesia and Great Leader of the Revolution to dissolve as soon as possible the Indonesian Communist Party, the People's Youth, the Indonesian Women's Movement Association [Gerwani], the Indonesian Public Works Union affiliated to the All-Indonesian Central Organisation of Trade Unions, and all other mass organisations that took part in or led the so-called 'September 30th Movement' or cooperated with this movement. 2. to request the President, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Indonesia and Great Leader of the Revolution to ban permanently all newspapers and other publications that directly or indirectly supported or assisted the so-called 'September 30th Movement'. 3. to call on all Muslims and all other revolutionary forces to fully assist the armed forces of the Republic of Indonesia in carrying out the orders of the President, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Indonesia and Great Leader of the Revolution concerning the settlement and handling of all consequences caused by the 'September 30th Movement'." Signed: Central Committee of the Islamic Teachers' Federation of Indonesia; Central Council of the Women's League of the Islamic Teachers' Federation [Muslimat NU]; Central Council of the Indonesian Muslim Trade Union [Sarbumusi]; Central Council of the Indonesian Islamic Teachers' Federation ... (reception unclear); Central Council of the Indonesian Muslim Association for Culture and Arts [Lesbumi]; Central Council of the Indonesian Ansor Youth [GP Ansor]; Central Council of the Indonesian Islamic Students' Movement [PMII]; Central Council of the Peasants' Association of the Islamic Teachers' Federation [Pertanu]; Central Council of the Indonesian Muslim Fishermen's Association [Pernu]. Jakarta, 5 October 1965. Statement of the Indonesian Islamic Union Party [PSII]: demands "resolute action" against the parties, organisations and individuals that took part in or sympathised with the September 30th Movement. On behalf of all its members, the Central Leadership Committee of Gerwani makes the following statement on the September 30th affair and on the directive of President Sukarno, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Indonesia and Great Leader of the Revolution, for settling this affair: 1. It fully supports the above directive. 2. It considers the September 30th Movement to be an internal problem of the army itself. 3. As regards the inclusion of a leading member of Gerwani in the Revolutionary Council, Gerwani states that it neither heard of nor was informed of it beforehand. 4. As regards this question, the fact that the names of Gerwani's volunteers have been dragged in is extremely astonishing and incomprehensible. The Central Leadership Committee of Gerwani calls on all Gerwani members to help actively carry out the above directive of President, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Indonesia and Great Leader of the Revolution Bung Karno. It hopes that Gerwani members and women in general will continue to raise national vigilance and strengthen the revolutionary national united front with Nasakom as its core.
