(TASS). Yesterday at a press conference the communiqué of the preparatory conference for the convening of the Congress of Peace Supporters of the countries of Asia and the Pacific Ocean was read out. The communiqué says: The preparatory conference, which began its sittings on 3 June in Peking, concluded its work on 6 June. The initiators of this conference are 11 representatives of China – well-known fighters for the cause of peace, who express the will of the Chinese people and who adopted the proposal of India and other peace-loving peoples. 47 delegates from 20 different countries took part in the preparatory conference: China, India, Pakistan, the Soviet Union, Japan, Korea, the United States, Australia, Mexico, Vietnam, Indonesia, Canada, Burma, Ceylon, the Mongolian People's Republic, Chile, New Zealand, the Philippines, Thailand and Malaya. Representatives of the World Peace Council and of the Liaison Bureau of the World Federation of Trade Unions for the countries of Asia and Oceania took part in the work of the preparatory conference. During the work of the conference, delegates of five countries – Colombia, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica – were on their way to Peking. Peru, Ecuador, Laos and Nepal agreed to the convening of this conference but, owing to various difficulties, could not send their delegates. [Translator's note: the OCR then gives a garbled list of observers – Australia, two from Burma, five from China, one from India and one from Indonesia – "attended the conference as observers"; the exact meaning is unclear.] At this conference the delegates of all countries spoke of the ardent aspiration of their peoples to peace and of the peace movement in their countries, and also sent proposals concerning the convening of the Congress of Peace Supporters of the countries of Asia and the Pacific Ocean, with the aim of broadening and strengthening the movement in defence of peace. The main task of the preparatory conference was to discuss and adopt an appeal and proposals concerning the preparation of the Congress. For drafting these two documents the preparatory conference created a committee to draft the appeal and an organising committee. These committees, with great effort, successfully fulfilled their task. After careful discussion, the appeal of the preparatory conference and the proposals concerning preparation of the Congress of Peace Supporters of the countries of Asia and the Pacific Ocean were adopted unanimously. Besides Guo Moruo, who signed the appeal as initiator of the conference, the appeal was signed by the following delegates of various countries: China – Chen Shutong, Liu Ningyi, Li Dequan, Nan Hanchen, Wu Yaozong [OCR-based spellings]; India – Professor Dharmanand Kosambi, Indulal Yagnik, Sardar Gurbaksh Singh; Pakistan – Ghulam Mohammed Khan, M. Ya. Shakur; Soviet Union – Vadim Kozhevnikov, Pilil Khodzhaev [sic], Ivan Glushenko; Japan – Tomi Kora, Hoashi [OCR], Miyakoshi; Korea – Pak Len Il, Pon Don Cok [OCR]; United States – John Kingsbury; Australia – John Barton, Van Erde, Stephen McIntyre, Ada Brockman, A. By decision of the preparatory conference, the Congress of Peace Supporters of the countries of Asia and the Pacific Ocean will convene in Peking in the last week of September 1952. To assist in the preparatory work for convening the Congress, the conference decided to appoint a general secretary and two deputy general secretaries at the organising committee; the general secretary is to be a representative of China, and his two deputies representatives of other countries; if necessary the general secretary has the right to invite delegates appointed by other interested countries to work as his assistants. Liu Ningyi has been appointed general secretary from China and has immediately started work. PEKING, 9 June. (TASS). In Peking, on the initiative of the heads of delegations to the preparatory conference, a press conference of Chinese and foreign correspondents was convened. The press conference was opened by Li Dequan [OCR: Li Yaz-pyuan], a member of the Chinese delegation, who stated that among the 47 delegates who came to the preparatory conference from 20 countries are scholars, artists, writers, workers, peasants, representatives of religious organisations, and representatives of industrial and commercial circles and of the press. Delegates of the Soviet Union, Pakistan, Australia and the USA also spoke at the press conference, stressing the importance of the work of the preparatory conference for strengthening friendship between the peoples of Asia and the Pacific and peace throughout the world. Japanese delegate Tomi Kora dwelt on the schemes of the American imperialists who are reviving Japanese militarism. Kora expressed firm confidence that the Japanese people, together with all the freedom-loving peoples of Asia and the Pacific, will win their liberation. Indian delegate Kosambi stated that the work of the preparatory conference has enormous significance for the development in India of the movement in defence of peace. The Burmese representative U Hla noted that the most important task of the delegates after their return home is to tell about the decisions of the preparatory conference and to call on their peoples to heighten vigilance against the schemes of the warmongers.
