...of the Peace Council, expressed their firm determination to continue, together with the mothers of the whole world, the struggle for peace and friendship between peoples and to oppose atomic war with all their strength.
In Brazil, from 29 June to 1 July, a National Assembly of Mothers was held in Rio de Janeiro in connection with the preparation of the World Congress of Mothers; it was convened by an initiative committee made up of prominent activists of the women's movement and representatives of women's organizations. [Unreadable] in very difficult conditions of repression and persecution, the women's organizations of Kenya, Iran, Iraq, Colombia, South Africa and the Caribbean managed to inform the majority of women about the convening of the congress, to explain its aims and tasks, and to form delegations for the congress.
During the preparation of the World Congress of Mothers the organizations of the WIDF [Women's International Democratic Federation] succeeded in establishing cooperation with other women's organizations at national and local level. For example, in Australia the women's section of the WIDF established ties with the section of the "League for Peace and Freedom" and with the organization "Parents and Citizens"; in New Zealand contact was established with the Country Women's Association; in Indonesia, with the numerous women's organization "Gervani" [Gerwani] and with the plantation workers' trade union. In Norway cooperation was established with the housewives' women's organization, in Tunisia with the League of Muslim Women, in West Germany with the "Women's Movement for Peace" and with the "League for Peace and Freedom".
All these facts allow the conclusion that the noble aims of the World Congress of Mothers will attract broad masses of women from various women's organizations, committees in defence of children, youth associations, trade-union women's sections, and also prominent women public and state figures.
The letters from women received by the International Preparatory Commission contain various wishes and proposals. For example, the writer Beatriz Guido (Argentina) proposes inviting Catholic mothers to this congress, as well as women of other faiths.
The Council of the National Federation of Indian Women, on behalf of the millions of women of India, wholly supports the aim of the World Congress of Mothers and expresses the wish that this congress speak out in support of the principles of coexistence and of the declaration of the Bandung Conference of the countries of Asia and Africa. The women of Norway proposed that the congress of mothers appeal to the UN with a demand for disarmament and the prohibition of atomic weapons.
Proceeding from the various wishes of women's organizations and of women-mothers, it has been decided to include in the programme of the congress of mothers a report on the theme "Mothers who give life are ready to defend it". On the basis of this report an exchange of opinions is to take place among the mothers taking part in the congress.
[The composition of all the delegations that will arrive at the congress in Lausanne has not yet been finally determined], but it is already known that the most numerous and most representative delegations will arrive from France and West Germany.
