Ranks are widening
COLOMBO, 15 June. (Special correspondent of "Pravda"). The session of the World Peace Council is in its sixth day.
One of the remarkable features of the present session is not only its exceptionally representative character but also the enormous activity of its participants. In the past days four plenary sittings and a large number of committee sittings have taken place. And, as before, the list of those wishing to speak, to make their proposals, to help in solving the most important tasks facing the session seems inexhaustible.
The discussion continues
Having set up working groups to draw up draft resolutions, the delegates gathered this morning for a plenary sitting at which the discussion of general questions continued. The delegates warmly welcomed the speech of the representative of the Women's International Democratic Federation, Mme Sardjono [Umi Sardjono], who, on behalf of the women and mothers of the whole world, voiced angry protest against the plans to unleash an imperialist war.
The Czechoslovak delegate, Professor Hromádka, stated that his country wishes to live in peace and friendship with the peoples of other countries. The people of Czechoslovakia are seriously concerned at the manoeuvres of the imperialists in Western Europe, and in particular at the plans to arm the revanchists of West Germany and equip them with atomic weapons.
Professor Hromádka said that the Czechoslovak people had followed with anxiety the struggle of the Hungarian people against the counter-revolution and had greeted with great joy the victory of the Hungarian working people, who gave a decisive rebuff to the imperialist provocation and thereby eliminated a serious danger of new conflicts in Europe.
The Soviet delegate, the Tajik poet Mirzo Tursun-zade, in his speech dwelt on the development of the national liberation struggle of the peoples of Asia and Africa. Using the example of Tajikistan, Tursun-zade showed what enormous successes a people can achieve when freed from the chains of colonial domination and given the possibility of free development of its creative forces in economics and national culture.
A. Sherif, delegate of the Iraqi supporters of peace, made a vivid speech at the session. He said that attempts are being made to entangle the Iraqi people in the nets of the aggressive Baghdad Pact and to turn the country into an American atomic base. The Baghdad Pact increases the military threat not only for the peoples of Iraq but for the peoples of the whole East. Sherif sharply condemned the imperialist aggression in Egypt. The Arab world, he said, speaks with gratitude of the position of the Soviet Union, whose government at the most critical moment made the most resolute warning to the aggressors.
