THE RESULTS OF THE TALKS ARE A VIVID EXPRESSION OF THE GROWING SOVIET-INDONESIAN FRIENDSHIP
Speeches by N. S. KHRUSHCHEV and SUKARNO at the dinner at the Soviet embassy in Indonesia
DJAKARTA, 1 March. (Special correspondent of TASS.) As already reported, yesterday the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR N. S. Khrushchev gave a dinner in honour of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, at which N. S. Khrushchev and President Sukarno exchanged friendly speeches.
Speech of N. S. KHRUSHCHEV
Esteemed Mr President! Ladies and gentlemen! Friends!
We have been in Indonesia quite a long time – 12 days – and are very glad of the meetings with you, moved by the cordial hospitality that was shown to us everywhere in your country. We have had many pleasant and useful talks with the esteemed President Sukarno and with members of the Indonesian government. We are people of different political convictions, but that has not prevented us from understanding each other well.
In short, dear friends, in our opinion the stay in Indonesia was not long enough. Yet to a certain degree the aim we set ourselves in connection with this trip – to show our guest the soul of the Indonesian people – has been achieved. Mr Khrushchev had the opportunity to talk with leaders of the Indonesian state who represent the people of Indonesia, with Djuanda, with Subandrio, with me. I think I shall not be mistaken if I say that we are spokesmen for the aspirations of the Indonesian people. Those common starting features that are inherent in you and in us serve as the basis for broad friendship and mutual understanding. Despite the short duration of your stay, here we managed to prepare and sign three important documents. They are a new vivid expression of the growing and strengthening friendship of the Soviet Union and the Republic of Indonesia.
You had the opportunity to meet the popular masses of Indonesia, with the Indonesian people, who gathered everywhere to greet you. You heard the enthusiastic cries of the Indonesians, saw the shine in their eyes, and that expresses what the people of Indonesia live by now. In 12 days you were able to meet and get to know Indonesia. One may say that you became acquainted with the essence of the Indonesian people. You, as it were, looked into its soul.
In what is the soul of Indonesia expressed? In the fact that the Indonesian people want independence, want a just and flourishing society, want happiness, want friendship with all the peoples of the world. And I know that you understood the soul of the Indonesian people. You not only sympathise with the people of Indonesia but are ready to give it disinterested help. We are happy that you accepted our invitation and came to our country.
N. S. Khrushchev: Why do you give away the secret? (Merry animation among those present.)
Sukarno: When we invited you, we knew that you represent the communists, that you yourself are a communist. But, as I said at the rally in Surabaya, are communists in Indonesia devils? No. They are people like everyone else. What is more, we consider you our good and reliable friend. Although you are a communist and we hold other ideological views, between our peoples, between the governments of our countries, between our states there are many common features which gave the possibility to develop friendship and cooperation between Indonesia and the Soviet Union.
The main reason is that the Soviet Union and Indonesia are united by common aims, common feelings and common aspirations. This is precisely the basis on which our strong friendship grows and develops. And since these conditions of our friendship are objective, I am sure that the friendship between Indonesia and the USSR will be eternal and indestructible.
However, there are also subjective conditions here. First among them are the personal qualities of the Prime Minister Khrushchev. Many of those present here have only recently become acquainted with Khrushchev, but I have already met him three times, though briefly. Our present meeting is the longest – 12 days. But I know and am sure that all who have come to know him only recently will find in Khrushchev a man very close to them; they will feel as if they stood beside their own brother, since he possesses such attractive personal qualities as friendliness and understanding. Khrushchev never hides anything behind his back; he is always an open heart, always complete clarity and frankness, and precisely for that reason my talks with him went openly, without complications, and ended successfully.
Khrushchev: When I was in the Soviet Union (the president said this in Russian) ... [Unreadable]
[The speeches continue, in the garbled columns, with the following passages.] Khrushchev: Before my trip to the United States of America, certain Americans, whom one could by no means suspect of sympathy for communists, told me: come to us in America and let the Americans look at you. When they see that you have no horns, that you are a man just like they are, there will be great benefit from it. I think that such people were right. My trip to the United States of America confirmed it. At times the bourgeois newspapers call me a "cunning communist", saying that everywhere and always I praise the United States. I hope you will not take offence at my saying so much here about the advantages of communism. I think you will not understand me as calling you to communism. We go our own road, you go yours. We must strengthen our friendship. After all, it benefits our countries and helps to strengthen peace throughout the world. It enriches our countries with mutual experience. Whoever has things going worse in some respect can borrow experience from the one for whom they go better.
I take pride in being a communist, and I truly speak a good deal about communism, because I deeply believe that it is the best, the most just teaching. The building of communism that is going on in our country on the basis of the teaching of Marxism-Leninism has raised our country to such a height that the capitalists' heads spin with envy. (Merry animation.)
The development of society is a struggle. The new struggles with the old; the old does not want to yield its place to the new. But the new, progressive thing inevitably wins in the end. Such is the law of social development. The social system that gives freedom to the people and ensures the best satisfaction of its material and spiritual needs wins.
I propose a toast to friendship between our countries and between our peoples. To the progress of our countries! To the people of Indonesia! To the Indonesian government! To the head of the Indonesian Republic, our friend, the person I deeply respect, President Sukarno! (Friendly applause.) To the greatness of the people, the state and the government of the Soviet Union! To the health of our glorious friend Nikita Khrushchev and of his whole family!
DEPARTURE OF N. S. KHRUSHCHEV FROM DJAKARTA
DJAKARTA, 1 March. Special correspondents of TASS Yu. Trushin and N. Pozdnyakov report: As already reported, on the morning of 1 March the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev and the officials accompanying him left the hospitable land of the Republic of Indonesia, taking with them the cordial wishes of the Indonesian people.
Tens of thousands of residents of the big city of Djakarta and its surroundings, who 12 days ago had welcomed N. S. Khrushchev, again came out on the streets of the city to greet the high Soviet guest. The arrival of the Chairman of the Council of Ministers N. S. Khrushchev, accompanied by President Sukarno, at the airfield was met with cries of welcome: "Selamat djalan!" (Happy journey!), "Hidup Khrushchev!" (Long live Khrushchev!). At 7.30 in the morning N. S. Khrushchev with President Sukarno, and the Soviet guests accompanying him, left the Merdeka Palace [Istana Merdeka], which had served as residence for N. S. Khrushchev, and went by car along the city streets to Kemayoran airfield. Everywhere, groups of representatives from different districts and islands of the country, dressed in colourful national costumes, heads of diplomatic missions, members of the government and parliament and others bade farewell to the Soviet guests. In the days of his stay in Indonesia N. S. Khrushchev warmly said goodbye to the Indonesian people; at the airfield he took leave of the officials of the Republic, of the President's family, and then approached the microphone and made a warm farewell speech.
Speech of N. S. KHRUSHCHEV
Your Excellency, Prime Minister Nikita Khrushchev! ... [Unreadable; the columns are mixed.] Dear friends! Our trip across your beautiful country has ended. We spent 12 days in Indonesia, travelling the whole country from north to south and from east to west. Although, considering the geographical position of Indonesia, such a journey would of course take a rather long time, for that reason we are to some extent dissatisfied that you were with us only 12 days. Yet it is easier on our heart because of the promise you gave to come to our country again on a cruiser and stay with us longer. Then, God willing, we will travel with you much more around your country. Did you not promise that?
We have had many pleasant and useful meetings. Our trip showed us not only the remarkable capital of Indonesia, Djakarta, but we also visited Bandung, known to the whole world, Djokjakarta [Yogyakarta], which is famous for its university, industrial Surabaya, and the fabled island of Bali, on the sunny land of Indonesia. And everywhere we, representatives of the Soviet Union, were received in a brotherly way, warmly and cordially. We were moved by the joy and enthusiasm with which the Indonesian people met us everywhere – at enterprises, at mass rallies, and simply in the streets and roads along which we travelled. Indonesia is not a neighbour of the Soviet Union. Our countries are separated by many states, vast seas, the highest mountains in the world. If one were to fly from one country to the other by plane, one would still have to cover more than 10 thousand kilometres. Yet the same feelings, the same aspirations, mutual sympathy that fills our hearts overcome mountains and oceans. Having such feelings, such love, we feel that Moscow is our close neighbour, even though, as Mr Khrushchev has just said here, we are not neighbours.
Our countries have different customs and ways, different social systems. And yet friendly relations have been established between the Soviet Union and Indonesia that are constantly strengthening and improving. These relations are an example of firm friendship and businesslike cooperation between states with different social and political conditions.
Why did millions of people come out onto the streets of the cities through which Nikita Sergeyevich passed? Why did they wait for hours at the roadsides, winding among what looked like fragments of enormous mirrors – the rice fields? Why did they crowd around palm groves and rubber-tree plantations, why did they hang Indonesian and Soviet flags on the thresholds of their modest peasant huts and put on their best clothes? With music and songs they met the high guest, and when the car carrying N. S. Khrushchev and President Sukarno appeared, they chanted words of welcome, hundreds of thousands, millions of sparkling eyes in which one could read the movement of the soul of all these people. They met Khrushchev brotherly, tenderly and rapturously, because he was a representative of the state of workers and peasants, which has passed a great road of struggle and victories, a state that in the period of its flowering and greatness builds a beautiful, happy life for its people and does not forget that there are countries in the world which, through no fault of their own, are still economically weak and in great need of fraternal help for raising their economy and culture and ensuring a better standard of living for the people.
The words on the banners alone: "Greetings to our friend Khrushchev!", "Greetings to the people of blessed Moscow!" "Long live brother Nikita!", "Long live the guardian of peace, the Soviet Union!" were written in grass and laid out in white pebbles on the reddish ground by the roads, in remote villages lost in the jungle. They chanted in Russian, and the Russian words "zdravstvuy", "druzhba", "spasibo" crowned everything in this music of human feelings that flowed over the land of Indonesia.
Moving meeting of N. S. KHRUSHCHEV with a delegation of public organisations of Indonesia
This took place on the last day of N. S. Khrushchev's stay in the hospitable and sunny land of Indonesia. To the residence where the high guest was staying came representatives of public organisations of Indonesia. On this farewell day they wished as it were to sum up the feelings and moods that inspired the millions of the Indonesian people when they welcomed the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR N. S. Khrushchev in all cities and villages. Among those present were leading figures of the Central All-Indonesian Federation of Trade Unions (SOBSI), the peasants' union (Barisan Tani Indonesia), the organisation of People's Youth (Pemuda Rakyat), the Indonesian women's movement (Gerwani [Gerwani]), the Indonesian Peace Defence Committee, the Society of Indonesian-Soviet Friendship and Cultural Relations, and the National Cultural Society.
Workers, peasants, students were there. They brought modest gifts: paintings, carved caskets, embroidered tablecloths, wooden figures – the fruits of their labour, a particle of their hearts. In baskets lay bright exotic fruit grown in the warm gardens of Indonesia, and a handful of snow-white rice. The first to speak was the General Secretary of the Central All-Indonesian Federation of Trade Unions, comrade Njono [Nyono]. Warmly greeting dear Nikita Sergeyevich, on behalf of the working people of Indonesia he said: "Your visit, our dear friend, has enormous significance for all of us, and not for us alone but for all peoples of the world. Your trip cements the friendship between Indonesia and the Soviet Union. It is of great importance for strengthening peace throughout the world. The agreement on economic aid that you and President Sukarno signed yesterday will strengthen the ... of Indonesia. The speeches you made strengthened and inspired our people and made their faith in the final victory over colonialism and imperialism more steadfast."
Next, a member of the State Committee, Suhardjo Rebo [Suharto Reba?], a former fighter of the famous student army, which covered its banners with glory in the armed struggle for the liberation of Indonesia from the yoke of the colonisers in 1945–1947, presented his guests with gifts for N. S. Khrushchev. [Translator's note: name uncertain in OCR.]
[Remaining columns: further farewell remarks by Khrushchev and Sukarno at the airfield, the 21-gun salute, take-off of the IL-18 at 8.20 Javanese time accompanied by an honour escort of Indonesian Air Force jet fighters, and a press-group report; continued on p. 3. Text largely garbled by column interleaving.]
Sukarno's farewell speech (as far as legible): Your Excellency, Mr Khrushchev! Respected ladies and gentlemen! Today the day has come whose arrival we cannot prevent – the day of parting, 1 March. Today you, Mr Khrushchev, and those accompanying you will leave the Republic of Indonesia. I cannot, like the gods of the epic Mahabharata, change the movement of the Sun; neither I nor the people of Indonesia can hold back the rising or the setting of the Sun. Although it is hard for my heart to meet this day, nothing can be done – it has come. [...] Mr Khrushchev, you have said that you stayed a rather long time in Indonesia; perhaps that is how it seemed to you. But we do not count the time as sufficient. [...] We say with pain in our hearts: soon, tomorrow, goodbye. But we know that you have very many important and pressing affairs and do not have the possibility to stay with us longer and to get to know all regions of Indonesia. However, we are convinced that you leave us with a clear understanding that the people of Indonesia is full of determination to struggle unswervingly against colonialism and imperialism. [...] Long live the friendship between the Soviet Union and Indonesia! (Stormy and prolonged applause.) [...] I wish you, respected Bung Karno [sic], health and new successes in your work. May the free Indonesian people flourish! Long live the friendship between the Soviet Union and Indonesia! Long live peace throughout the world! (Stormy and prolonged applause.)
