=== [Page 1] === ESSAY Yekaterina SHEVELYOVA On the Island of Java (From a travel diary) Recently a delegation of the Anti-Fascist Committee of Soviet Women, which included the author of these lines, visited Indonesia at the invitation of the large Indonesian women's organisation "Gerwani" [Gerwani], and spent almost a month on the island of Java. Indonesia is a country with still young state experience and at the same time with a heavy old colonial legacy. For three hundred years Holland was the absolute master-colonizer on the Indonesian islands. In the course of the Second World War Holland was displaced by Japan. After the military defeat of Japan (in 1945) a republic was proclaimed in Indonesia. Immediately afterwards Holland, with the help of British armed forces, tried by aggression to regain its former domination. The Indonesian people took up arms to defend the freedom and independence of their homeland. The struggle was unequal. Holland was also supported by the United States, which spent about 400 million dollars on the war against Indonesia. In the liberation struggle Indonesia lost almost 6 million of its patriots. The representative of the Soviet Union in the United Nations several times in that period spoke with a categorical demand for the cessation of aggression in Indonesia. As if in reply, the USA put forward a "peaceful" proposal to convene the so-called "round table conference" of Holland and Indonesia. At that conference in 1949 a union with Holland was imposed on Indonesia, limiting the sovereignty of the republic and advantageous only to the colonisers. Almost all plantations, mines, factories and plants proved to be in the hands of foreign capitalists. The richest country, with a population of 80 million, first in the world in rubber production, among the first in rice growing, seventh in oil production, a country of precious natural resources and of a gifted, industrious and courageous people, found itself deprived of rights over its riches. But the people of Indonesia, which had grown and matured politically in the struggle, did not resign itself to this. Under the pressure of a powerful popular movement the colonisers were forced to enter into negotiations. They ended on 10 August 1954 with the signing of an agreement on the liquidation of the Dutch-Indonesian union established under the active pressure of American imperialists. In the country the movement for the complete liquidation of the colonial regime is widening and growing. Indonesia's struggle for freedom and national independence merges with its struggle for peace, against the machinations of the instigators of war. The republic refused to take part in the aggressive bloc being put together by American imperialists in South-East Asia. The five principles of relations between countries proclaimed in the communiqué on the talks of Zhou Enlai [Chou En-lai] with Jawaharlal Nehru: "1) mutual respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty; 2) non-aggression; 3) non-interference in each other's internal affairs; 4) equality and mutual benefit; 5) peaceful coexistence" – were met with warm approval by Indonesian public opinion. The young republic, overcoming the burdensome consequences of colonial oppression, strives for peace, for prosperity, and this is felt everywhere on its soil.
