=== [Page 1] === Query hit: Gerwani Ban on the Indonesian CP Mr Sukarno's policy thwarted by the army Singapore (AP). – The Indonesian Communist Party and all affiliated organisations have been banned on the order of General Hadikasumo [Hadisoemo?], commander of the Djakarta region, Indonesian radio announces. Among the banned organisations are Pemuda Rakjat, the communist youth movement, Gerwani [Gerwani], the women's organisation, and Sosbi [SOBSI], the large pro-communist trade-union centre. Other pro-communist organisations have been banned, among them the "Peasants' Front", the "Assembly of Indonesian Scientists" and four student movements. These various organisations have been vigorously criticised since the failed coup d'état of last 1 October. The ban order states: "With a view to the rapid restoration of order, it was absolutely necessary to suspend the organisations and movements that took part in the failed coup d'état of 30 September." This ban, which applies throughout Indonesian territory, constitutes a victory for the military, who in recent weeks have launched a vigorous campaign against the Indonesian CP (PKI). The Communist Party claims to have 3 million members in the country, to whom would be added several million sympathisers. Such numbers would make it the largest communist movement outside the Soviet and Chinese blocs. The latest information from Djakarta nevertheless suggested that President Sukarno was resisting the pressure of the army, which demanded the dissolution of the PKI and asserted that the communists had taken part directly in the failed coup d'état of 1 October. [Translator's note: the OCR has "Gette «vÉerdiotioiv" for "Cette interdiction".]
