In INDONESIA, rebels and... communists are being hunted down
DJAKARTA – The situation in Djakarta is gradually returning to normal and 90 per cent of the rebels have reportedly already been arrested, it is learned from an Indonesian military source. It is specified, from the same source, that the elements who held various regions of the centre of the island a few days after the aborted coup d'état had fled into the mountains and had not been able to regroup thanks to the action of the army. It is now certain that five battalions (a total of 4,000 men) took part in the coup d'état of 30 September. Among them were notably a battalion of the presidential guard, an air force shock battalion, two divisions from central and east Java and a battalion of 800 men, "volunteers" for crushing Malaysia.
THE HOMES OF THE COMMUNIST LEADERS RANSACKED
The homes of Mr Dipa Nusantara Aidit, leader of the Indonesian Communist Party, and of his deputy, Mr Njoto [Nyoto], the party's theorist and a serving minister, were ransacked by Muslims. Mr Aidit's house was invaded after Mr Njoto's, then the demonstrators ransacked the headquarters of the organisation of communist women "Gerwani" [Gerwani]. A sum of one billion rupiahs was found at Mr Aidit's home, not counting important documents. The crowd made a bonfire of the radio and television sets and a motorbike found at Mr Aidit's. Elsewhere, paratroop units succeeded in capturing 86 "counter-revolutionaries" involved in the movement of 30 September near Brebes (central Java), announces the strategic command of the army. Fifty-seven of them belonged to the bodyguard of President Sukarno, dissolved after the coup d'état. The others had belonged to an infantry brigade, commanded by Colonel Latif, which was part of the staff of the coup.
