FDD has received the regular issues of Angkatan Bersendjata, the 2 October 1965 issue of the PKI daily Harian Rakjat, the 3 October 1965 issue of HR Mi » Which is the Sunday edition of Harian Rakjat, and the 2 October ists issue of-the PNI daily Suluh indonesia. Presemebly, these were the last editions of the PET and PNI pepers to be published. Tne front page of the 2 October edition of Harian Rakjat carried the text of the initial radio ennouncement by the 3C September Movement under the headline "Lt Col Untung, Commander of a Tjakrabirawa Battclion, Seves the President end the RI from a Coup By the Council Of Generals". The subheading of this article was "30 September Movement Solely a Movement Within the Arzy." Also on the front page of Herian Rakjat were the texts of one decree and two directives issved by the 30 September Movement > an orcer of the day issued by Air Force Commander Omar Dani » @nd an announcement by Sukarno saying that he was in good health and in control of the country and the revolution. The front page also contained an editorial supporting the 30 September Movement and a Strip of cartoons depicting the events of the week. The Single cartoon for 30 September and 1 October showed a fist labclea "30 Septenver Movement” striking a uniformed figure weering the lable "Council of Generals"; a figure of Uncle Sam watches in dismay. The certoon for 2 October shows two generals falling on sharpened bemboS stakes while ea helmcted figure smiles at the scene. The front page of Harian Rakjat also contained several news articles On events unrelated to the 30 September Movement. Except for two other itecs, the remaining three pases of the paper were devoted to routine @rticies. An article on the second pege reported a speech by Anwer Sanusi in which he likened the situation in Indonesia to a case of 30 September Movement has taken action egainst the Council of Generels. fhe sympathy and support of the pesple are on the side of the 30 September Movement". The absence of any exhortation by Hersan Rak jat to oppose the generals or rally round the 30 September Movement made it seem as though the whole thing was an accomplished tert and that there was no need for any undue excitement. ER Minggu » the Sunday edition of Harian Rak jat, publishes cultural items and short stories rather than news articles and probably is printed several days before its date of issue. The 3 October edition of ER Minggu did not publish any news items on the 30 September Movement but did print several poems that may have been written with the incident in mind.; _ The 2 October 1965 edition of Suluh Indonesia, the PNI daily, carried only a short article on the events that had transpired in Djekarta and made it clear that this account had come from the Army information Office. The most prominent article on the front page of the paper was a protestation of lcyalty to Sukarno issued by the PNI‘s central executive. The paper did not denounce the 30 September Movement nor did it publish any of the statements issued by the movement. The paper did pudlish a statement saying that the PNI's central executive knew nothing about the inclusion of the names of PNI members on the list of members of the Revolution Council and that the central executive was not responsible for the inclusion of these names. The general impression created by Suluh Indonesia's coverage of the events in Djakarta wes that the PNI cid not know what was going on but was reaffirming its support of Sukarno as the safest course to follow. Suluh Indonesia did not editorialize on the incident and confined its coverage of events to the front page. The 2 October 1965 edition of Angketan Bersendjata, a paper published by the military, cerried the headline, "30 September Movenent (Counterrevolutionary) Smashed". Subheadings announced that the President and armed forces chief of staff were safe and thet all broadcasts of the Revolution Council were lies. The paper reported thet the 30 September Movement has seized power under the pretext of safeguarding the President and to crush a nonexistent Council of Generals and that the movement had been smashed. The front page of ' the paper aiso carried statements by Gens Suharto and Sugnadhi and Adm Martadineta, and editorial on the 30 September Movement, and announcenents of the establishment of a curfew in Djakarta and tae banning of ail publications except Angkatan Bersendjata and Berita aucha. The remaining three pages cf the paper were devoted to Yroutine items. (cont 'a) === [PDF page 7] === Subsequent editions of Angkatan Bersendjata vere ‘devoted entirely to the events that had occurred in Djakarta.. The paper vas filled with statements by military and civilian organizations and leaders coademning the 30 September Movement and mourning the army officers killed in the incident. In the h October 1965 edition of the paper, the single nevs item not related to the events in Djakarta reported that the Philippines delegate to the UN had said that the Spread of nuclear weapons, such as the explosion by the Pecple's Republic of China of its first atomic bomb, threatened mankind with destruction.. Now the Republic of Indonesia is cloaked with sadness and anxiety. This stab in the back has benefited Nekolim and damages the struggling people. A deep and penetrating pain is felt by the members of the Army and by the people. In an act of cruelty, the act of a bloodthirsty animal, the counterrevolutionary traitors of the 30 September Movement took the lives of these patriots. The President was right in saying that the incident should be condemned, and he has given the title of "Heroes of the Revolution" to these seven patriots, who are heroes in the true meaning of the word. May God show mercy to these heroes for all of their sins and misdeeds against Him. May the Merciful and Forgiving God receive their souls. [Unreadable] Djakarta, Angkatan Bersendjata, 5 Oct 65 Savage Butchery The counterrevolutionary adventurists of the so-called 30 September Movement have cruelly and wantonly taken the lives of seven of the leading soldiers of the Army. It was a savage act because it is not fitting that anyone should be killed in such a way, much less the great sons of Indonesia who have been loyal to and served the revolution from its beginning. We say this was an act of savagery because the men were abducted and dragged from their bedrooms in the early morning, were tortured and shot until they died, and then were thrown headfirst into an old well, one on top of the other. Again we say that this was an act of unparalleled savagery. One thing that is important to note is that the bodies were found near a bivouac area of Gerwani and Pemuda Rakjat volunteers [volunteers for the campaign against Malaysia]. The cruel murder of the seven officers took place while the Gerwani and Pemuda Rakjat volunteers were camping in that area. Connect this with the attitude and statements of Pemuda Rakjat, which clearly side with the counterrevolutionaries of the 30 September Movement. How could these PKI organizations, Pemuda Rakjat and Gerwani, not know of this incident when it occurred only a few meters from their tents? A healthy mind finds this impossible to accept, and certainly it is impossible that the PKI itself did not know. {cont'd} === [PDF page 30] === [Unreadable] It would be well to note the statement made by Maj Gen Suharto at that place after the bodies were raised from the old well. He said that we should note the fact that near the well was a training center for volunteers from Gerwani and Pemuda Rakjat that was run by or handled by the Air Force. He said that it was possible that this training was being given within the framework of the defense of the base, but that according to a member of Gerwani who was arrested in Tjirebon and who trained at Lobang Buaja, these people had come from Central Java. Therefore, a connection certainly exists between the abduction and murder of these seven officers and the activities of Pemuda Rakjat and Gerwani in that place. We remember that 2 days before these cruel murders occurred D. N. Aidit told the CGMI Congress that they should take off their pants and put on sarongs if they were unable to finish crushing the HMI by themselves. Aidit's command certainly applied also to all activities of the PKI organization. Thus we denounce this act of cruelty and barbarity, an act of cruelty and barbarity rivaling that carried out by the PKI of Musso in Madiun in 1948. It is obligatory on us all to be conscious of the meaning of the act carried out by the counterrevolutionary 30 September Movement because it concerns the prestige and honor of the state, the people, the country, and religion. It concerns the honor of Indonesians who uphold the Pantjasila and Manipol and the honor of soldiers who are loyal to the Soldiers' Oath.
