SUKARNO SPEECH MARKS S. SULAWESI ANNIVERSARY
Djakarta Domestic Service in Indonesian 1520 GMT 10 December 1964--B
(Text) President Sukarno has emphasized that only if the Indonesian people defend their flaming spirit of struggle will we be able to keep intact. the Indonesian Republic which we proclaimed on 17 August 1945. The President made his remark this evening at the commempration of the anniversary of Westerling's massacre of 40,000 people in South Sulawesi at a rally at the Senajan Sports Palace.
The President recalled that Malaysia was formed in order to subdue the people.
of Southeast Asia and preserve the interests of British imperialism. For this reason, the chief of state called on the people of Kalimantan Utara and Malaya to oppose Malaysia to the end. He stressed that the struggle against imperialism is a glorious struggle. No struggle can achieve success without sacrifices. These sacrifices will never be in vain, he said.
In his speech, the President also discussed imperialist policy which always alternates between using force and urging cooperation. This process is always repeated over and over, he said. He also stressed that it has been imperialism itself which has moved the colonialized people to turn against imperialism.
Their leaders act merely as their spokesmen, he said.
In his speech, Third Deputy Premier Chaerrul Saleh called on the Indonesian people to keep alive the fire of the spirit of the South Sulawesi people which was reflected in the massacre of 40,000 people in the region by Westerling
and his NICA (Netherlands Indies Civil Administration--ed.) soldiers. He also called on Indonesians to project the fire and the spirit of the South Sulawesi people to the people of the new emerging forces for the complete destruction of imperialism, colonialism, and neocolonialism.
Citing the events in South Vietnam, the Congo, and Angola as examples, Third Deputy Premier Chaerul Saleh warned that imperialism is still alive and that it still continues its attempt to perpetuate its domination. Nevertheless, he.
warned that the Indonesian people will not be intimidated by any kind of weapon and thatthe Indonesian people will continue the struggle until imperialism, colonialism, and neocolonialism are erased from the face of the earth.
In his speech, National Front Secretary General Sudibjo called on the Indonesian people to draw a lesson from the South Sulawesi incident for continuing the struggle to complete the revolution.
A speech was also delivered by Mrs. Salawati Draud, a woman leader from South Sulawesi, who called on Indonesian women to have the courage to suffer and to die for the completion of the revolution.
In his speech, Parliament Vice Speaker Mursalin Daeng,Mamangung recalled the history of the South Sulawesi massacre. He stressed that the incident was proof that the South Sulawesi people were not lagging in the struggle for independence. He also said that the South Sulawesi people's declaration that they were behind the Indonesian Republic demonstrated that the South Sulawesi people had the republican spirit and that they were solidly behind the leader of the revolution, Bung Karno.
