The KOMPAS daily quoted a security spokesman in South Sumatra as saying that an investigation by local security forces had found that Akhmad Syabrun Caropeboka had past connections with the PKI. === [PDF page 2] === Mr. Caropeboka, 56, had been treasurer for Golkar’s South Sumatran provincial chapter until the alleged past links were discovered, KOMPAS said. The PKI, Asia’s second-largest communist party after China in the early 1960’s, was banned in 1966 six months after an abortive coup attempt the government blamed on the party. The spokesman said Mr. Caropeboka had managed to hide past membership in a PKI-related organization. He has also held several key posts in other public organizations. Government officials have in past years stepped up warnings of the dangers of a possible communist comeback. Other Golkar executives have been accused of having past links with the PKI this year. Security authorities in West Sumatra announced this week that the head of a Golkar district chapter there had past links with PKI-affiliated organizations.
