=== [PDF page 1] === Army Spokesman on Release of Communist Activist BK2308063589 Jakarta ANTARA in English 0559 GMT 23 Aug 89 [Text] Jakarta, August 23 (OANA/ANTARA)}—Brig Gen Nurhadi Purwosaputro, chief spokesman of the Indonesian Armed Forces Headquarters (Mabes ABRI), said here Wednesday (23 August] that the recent release of Mrs Sundari Abdulrahman, 68, former chairwoman of the banned communist women organization Gerwani [Indonesian Women’s Movement], was due to the fact that she has done her time in prison and in line with the existing laws and regulations. “There are no other factors as the backgrounds for her release,” he firmly stated to answer an ANTARA question in conjunction with the recent release of one the former communist activists, Mrs Sundari. Mrs Sundari was sentenced to a life imprisonment by the Lampung District Court in Tanjungkarang in 1976 for her involvement in the abortive communist coup in September 30, 1965, While serving her time in the Tangerang Women Prison, she obtained remission from the president, which eventually brought to her release last week. Brig Gen Nurhadi hoped that the people would be able to receive those who have been released from the prison. However, the ABRI spokesman reminded that the national vigilance should be maintained and even be strengthened.
