Second Chamber of the States General 2
Session 1975-1976 Appendix to the Proceedings
Questions put by members of the House, with the answers given to them by the Government
111
Questions from the member Van der Spek (P.S.P.) on the position of the Netherlands Government with regard to political prisoners in Indonesia. (Submitted 29 August 1975)
1. Have the Ministers taken note of the following passages in "Indonesia"? [footnote: Appearing in the article "The relationship between the Netherlands and Indonesia", in the magazine "Indonesia" of 17 August 1975, published by the Indonesian embassy in The Hague:]
"Another problem that has an adverse influence on the relationship between the Netherlands and Indonesia is the question of political prisoners in Indonesia, for which the Netherlands Government now has full understanding, in connection with the national reconstruction of the country carried out by the Indonesian government, whereby the Indonesian government necessarily must foster an atmosphere that guarantees success."
2. Is the position of the Netherlands Government with regard to political prisoners in Indonesia correctly rendered by the above formulation?
3. If not, in what way do the Ministers intend to remove the misunderstandings about this position that have evidently arisen with the Indonesian government and doubtless among the readers of the above-mentioned magazine?
Answer from Minister Van der Stoel (Foreign Affairs), also on behalf of the Minister for Development Cooperation. (Received 7 October 1975)
Answer 1: The answer to this question is in the affirmative.
Answers 2 and 3: The content of the said magazine, in which the article in question appears, remains entirely the responsibility of the authors. Moreover, the Government has repeatedly brought to the attention of the Indonesian government the concern that exists here both in the Government and in public opinion regarding the problem of political prisoners. Most recently I did so during my conversation with my Indonesian colleague Mr Malik on 25 September last in New York.
