=== [PDF page 1] === Massye Siwi, director of the new Indonesian monthly wemen’s magazine “Api Kartini” (spirit of Kartini) tells us about her journal, Why “Api Kartini”? Because Kartini, as you perhaps know, is our national Indonesian heroine... and because our magazine intends to develop the spirit of Kartini. It ig published under the sponsorship of the “Jajason Melati” commitlee which includes members of GERWANI and other personalities. The “Jajason Melati” concerns itself with social and cultural questions such as: education and the improvement of the health of women and children, and, the publication of “Api Kartini® is one of its activities. The magazine has set itself a triple objective: to develop women’s knowledge, to cultivate their patriolism and to strengthen international friendship. It is realising the first by giving editorial commentaries on the political and economic situation, by publishing an article on the most important events of the month, a reportage on a cross section of women, advice on cooking, dressmaking and hygiene, the care of children, their education, humorous sketches on conditions of daily life; the second by making known and exalting national traditions which have a positive character; the third by articles on the life of women of other countries. In addition each issue contains an Indonesian short story or one trans- Jated from another language and a pum. “Api Kartini” has only been coming out since June 1959, but it is already very successful among women.
