Indonesia: Women's struggle against foreign intervention (WIDF, 1958)
1958 WIDF note: Indonesian women write that the country faces rebellion backed by SEATO and the US (the PRRI/Permesta crisis), and that women join the struggle shoulder to shoulder with men. Gerwani sets up public kitchens, collects food and magazines for the front, runs first aid; in rebel-held West Sumatra its leaders and members reportedly led demonstrations and some were shot or burnt alive.
“'leaders and members of Gerwani in areas under rebel rule are heroically fighting... In West Sumatra... many women laid down their lives. They were shot or burnt alive' (p. 2).”
