Dr. Sjarif Thajeb stated that the sending of Indonesian students to foreign countries for further studies does not deviate from the policy of the Indonesian Government. He made this statement upon questions by the press. He said that this was in the framework of stepping up the BERDIKARI (Self-Reliance) policy of Indonesia.
Speaking about Indonesian students studying in Socialist countries, Dr.
Sjarif Thajeb said that this was granted to those who have completed their first year at the university. However, Dr. Sjarif Thajeb continued, the students would be given intensive indoctrination before going to these foreign countries.
In the framework of stepping up the quality of the Indonesian students studying in foreign countries, it was decided to establish several attaches for students abroad in the near future. The proposal had been discussed by the Minister for Higher Education with the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department for Basic Education and Culture.
