=== [Page 1] === Djakarta: communist leader before the court. Mr Njono probably to be sentenced to death. The special military court before which the trial of the Indonesian communist leader Mr Njono opened yesterday morning is composed of twelve senior officers of the army, navy, air force and police. This special tribunal was created in 1963 by presidential decree to try those responsible for counter-revolutionary activities. Its judgment is without appeal, but the president may exercise his right of pardon. The accused is defended by a single lawyer, Mrs Trees Soenito, aged 50, daughter of a former Dutch civil servant in Indonesia and wife of a left-wing Indonesian leader who is himself currently in prison as a presumed sympathiser of the authors of the failed coup. Mrs Soenito stated that she was appointed to defend Mr Njono only last Saturday, after all the other lawyers approached had declined. She said she did not know how long the trial would last. Very large police and army forces, including about a dozen tanks, have sealed off the district where the court is located. No foreign journalist was admitted to the courtroom, which only a very small number of named Indonesian journalists were allowed to enter.
