The trial of those who wanted to overthrow Sukarno has begun (UPI-AFP). SINGAPORE, 15 [Feb] - Yesterday in Djakarta the first of a series of trials opened in which the persons implicated in the failed coup d'etat of 1 October last will be judged. At the opening of the trial, Mr Njono, one of the principal defendants, admitted having attended the August and September sessions of the Central Committee of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI), at which it was a question of forming a 'revolutionary council' and giving military training to elements of the party. Mr Njono, who was first secretary of the party for the Djakarta region and a member of the PKI Central Committee, nevertheless denied that there had been any question of overthrowing the Sukarno government. He explained that the party had got wind of a plot hatched by generals to seize power on the occasion of the illness or possibly the death of President Sukarno. The 'revolutionary council' and the party's armed detachments were meant to foil this plot. The accused is defended by a single lawyer, Mrs Trees Soenito, aged 50, daughter of a former Dutch official in Indonesia and wife of a left-wing Indonesian leader who is himself currently in prison as a presumed sympathiser of the authors of the failed coup d'etat. Mrs Soenito stated that she was only appointed to defend Mr Njono last Saturday, after all the other lawyers approached had declined.
