Isa said that he agreed with the postponement solely on the basis of the technical problems involved and that he thought that it would have been impossible to hold out the election within the set time. Anwar Harjono of Masjumi said that the government's decision to postpone the elections could be understood in view of the present stage of technical preparations. K. Werdojo, chairman of the National Progressive fraction in Parliament, said that he did not agree with the postponement and that he was not convinced that the technical difficulties, given as the reason, could not have been overcome. 4. PKI Figures in the News The 25 September 1958 Nusantara reported that the secretariat of the PKI fraction in Parliament announced that S. Sudjojono, a PKI member of Parliament, had been dismissed from the PKI as of 23 September. The announcement said that it was hoped that Sudjojono would resign from his seat in Parliament so that he could be replaced by a person who could be trusted to represent the people and the PKI. According to the announcement his dismissal was due to the fact that he had not been obedient to the PKI constitution, particularly that part which states that a member must set an example in his daily life, strengthen the connections between the masses and the party, and remain honest to the party. Sudjojono had carried out actions which violated Communist morals in regard to relations between men and women the announcement said. The same issue of Nusantara reported that Suwardiningsih, member of the PKI East Java Provcom (Provincial Committee) and of the Constituent Assembly, was imprisoned in Kalisosok prison in Surabaja on 22 September. Suwardiningsih had made derogatory remarks about Moh. Hatta, when he was vice-president of the Republic of Indonesia at a public meeting in Lamongan in 1953, the report said Suwardiningsih had been given a 6-month sentence for this offense. The appeal to President Sukarno resulted in the sentence being reduced to one month. Thousands of women sympathizers had formed outside the prison awaiting her arrival, according to the report. 5. PNI and Partindo Sin Po of 8 September 1958 reported on the comments made by PNI member Master of Laws Sartono to meeting of the Marhaenist Front in Djakarta. Sartono is chairman of Parliament, and, according to the article was a prominent figure in the prewar Partindo. Sartono affirmed that Marhaenism is Marxism adapted to the Indonésian situation but said that it is not proletarianism and does not urge class struggle. He said that the PNI does not accept the doctrine of historical materialism in its entirety, because Marhaenism teaches that the characteristics and development of society are determined by common aspirations as well as by the economic situation. He said that the PNI could not accept dictatorship in any form whatsoever. 10
