=== [Page 1] === Gerwani wants a democratic marriage law [Opening garbled by OCR; readable fragments follow.] To the press [...] the Gerakan Wanita Indonesia [Gerwani] [...] Indonesian [...] the position of [women ...] in married life [...] Constituante [Constituent Assembly] [...] given the striving for the solution of [...] the central board of the Gerwani considers it necessary to set out its opinion as follows: Since the proclamation of the Republic of Indonesia, the status of women and their rights have been guaranteed in the provisional constitution, which [is ...] the result of the struggle of the women's movement [...] emancipation, [...] R.A. Kartini, who tirelessly fought for the equalisation of the rights of man and woman [...] and the guarantee of the [...]. But nevertheless practice has taught that the majority of [women are] not yet able to enjoy the equal standing of their rights with those of men, and in married life it still often happens that women's rights are violated. The case of Maisuri, a girl from Tandjungradja (South Sumatra), who was forced into marriage, is a striking example of the said violations. [...] is that the Indonesian governments have to date not been able to create conditions for the guarantee of women's rights in the provisional constitution. In addition there is still no democratic marriage law that guarantees the interests of man, woman and children in married life, a fact to which the unhappy consequences of marriage are chiefly to be ascribed. On this basis, the demand of women for the guarantee of their rights in accordance with articles 2 and 16 of the Declaration of Human Rights of the U.N. will achieve satisfactory results if women are active in the elections for the Constituante and the formation of a sound government that is able to meet the interests of women and to create conditions for the realisation of the equality of women's rights with those of men in the political, social and economic fields. It has no value to speak now about the status of the woman in married life, about the household of the [President] and the "first lady" office, if at the same time [women do not] concentrate on the struggle for a democratic marriage law, since the opposite can only give rise to degeneration of the original aim and the emergence of division among women. All the more so since the meaning, the function and the necessity of a "first lady" are still unknown to the Indonesian common [woman ...] rights, but we cannot agree when one woman is granted privileges in social and political life merely through the position of her husband, and not through her own conduct. The question is not who should be "first lady", but the preservation of the joint striving of the women toward democratic marriage legislation and a more sound government, as expressed in the victory of the democratic bloc in the past elections for [representation ...] thus the declaration of the secretariat of the central board of the Gerwani. [Other article: The London ambassador of Czechoslovakia, Jiri Hajek [sic], lodged an angry protest with the British Foreign Office over the discovery of hidden microphones in his study and hall; after some searching the shop where the devices were bought was found, and it turned out that the buyer had been a member of the Czechoslovak embassy. Nothing more has been heard from the embassy. – not otherwise relevant]
