=== [Page 1] === Chairwoman of Gerwani The chairwoman of the central board of the Gerwani (left-oriented Indonesian women's association), Mrs Umi Sardjono, declared to the press on Wednesday that the Gerwani regrets that certain groups have systematically made attempts to persuade Mrs Fatmawati Soekarno to ask for a divorce from the president. Mrs Sardjono declared that the said groups have taken this path to serve their own political interests, which are in line with the aims of colonialism, namely the splintering of national unity, the besmirching of the president's good name and the creation of a gulf between the president and the people. According to Mrs Sardjono the Gerwani is of the opinion that Mrs Fatmawati's decision to ask for a divorce from the head of state is a private matter between President Soekarno and his wife, so that everyone should stay out of it. Whether the divorce is realised is also a question between the president and Mrs Fatmawati herself. The principle of a marriage not under compulsion is always upheld by the Gerwani, so that any interference or pressure can be regarded as a violation of personal freedom, said Mrs Sardjono. Marriage law The only way for the women who wish sincerely to fight for the creation of just foundations for marriage and divorce is to bring about that a marriage law on a democratic basis be created soon. As long as such a law does not exist, the rights of women can always be impaired. Mrs Sardjono added that the time has now come for all women's organisations in this country to fight for the creation of this democratic marriage law. Who will come to the palace? "Indonesia Raya" reports that Mrs Fatmawati Soekarno is said to have said that she is in no case prepared to withdraw her request for divorce. Even if the president were to divorce his second wife, Mrs Hartini, Mrs Fatmawati would not even be prepared to be reconciled with the head of state. The paper further reports that all the children of the president and Mrs Fatmawati now live with her in her new house in Kebajoran Baru. Meanwhile "Pedoman" reports that Mrs Hartini is said to have claimed that in principle she is not prepared to come and live in the Negara Palace in Djakarta, as a result of Mrs Fatmawati's request for divorce. But if she is compelled by circumstances to do so, for example if protocol considers it necessary, Mrs Hartini will be prepared to come and live in the Negara palace. Psychological factors Some leaders of women's associations declared to "Pedoman" that they have so far never had anything against the person of Mrs Hartini. They merely disagree with the fact that the president has two wives. If Mrs Fatmawati's divorce becomes a fact, said the said leaders of the women's organisations, Mrs Hartini will then be the president's only wife. And as the president's wife she naturally has the right to live with her husband in the Negara Palace. But however that may be, it is desirable to take into account psychological factors in society and the wishes of all women's associations, if it comes to the president deciding to bring Mrs Hartini to the palace, so reports "Pedoman".
