Women's delegation at the palace: Still much commotion about new marriage of [Soekarno]
The delegation of women that met on Friday and Saturday about the marriage of President Soekarno with Mrs. Soewondo [Hartini] paid a visit to the palace yesterday. The delegation of four ladies, which was led by Mrs. Kartowijono, chairwoman of the Perwari, stayed an hour at the palace. No statements were made about what was discussed.
Meanwhile Soekarno's marriage remains at the centre of attention. Also outside Indonesia, mainly in Malaya and the Philippines, the daily papers devote front-page space to reports about this marriage. The Indonesian daily press is divided into two camps, of which one regrets the marriage as "not fitting for a head of state" and the other thinks that it is "completely free for Soekarno to marry a second wife".
The moderate Chinese paper "Keng Po" warns that the political leaders and the press, through all kinds of trivialities of little importance for the development of history, lose sight of the main line. "People get worked up about the president's private affairs, while in fact all attention should be directed at the political symptoms that recall the situation before the outbreak of the communist uprising at Madioen in 1948", the paper says. "The fuss that is made about the president's private affairs will not only bind the communist party more closely to the president, but also benefit the P.K.I., because general attention is diverted from the preparations that the communist party and associates are quietly making", according to "Keng Po". The paper "Duta Masjarakat", which stands close to the government party Nahdatul Ulama, regrets the president's latest marriage, since it "damages the standing and prestige of Bung Karno and of the state". The paper hopes that the president's present advisers and the "palace clique" will be replaced by "men of character who dare to express their opinion and do not say yes and amen to everything". The paper "Utusan Nasional" argues along the same lines, and devotes Soekarno's new marriage mainly to the interference of the head of the household service of the palace, the former general Soehardjo, "who stems from a feudal milieu and is always intent on making the life of his superior pleasant in every possible way".
The paper "Suara Rakjat" (very left-socialist), appearing in Soerabaja, writes that "Bung Karno occupies a place of his own in the heart of the majority of the Indonesian people and that therefore the simple man can hardly believe that he — and in his present position at that — entered into this marriage. One will always ask oneself: why, why and again why. The answer will no doubt remain unforthcoming and those who still want to see engineer doctor Soekarno as Bung Karno can only weep about this", the paper says. The paper "Pikiran Rakjat", appearing in Bandung, emphasises that in Indonesia — where society still bears a feudal character and every action of the president can have a bad influence on Indonesian society — this marriage can cause unpleasant repercussions in society. The paper remarks that Bung Karno is apparently going through a crisis now and wonders how such a leader can lead a people that is also struggling with various crises. "To overcome his present crisis there is only one way: he must distance himself from the present palace clique." Finally "Pikiran Rakjat" points out that also at the time against the president's second marriage (that with Mrs. Fatmawati), during the Japanese occupation, much resistance arose from the side of the women's organisations. The paper "Daulat Rakjat", appearing in Semarang, writes that Soekarno as a Muslim may certainly marry a second, third and even a fourth wife as well. The Islamic paper "Pemandangan" justifies the marriage on medical and decency considerations. "Indonesia Raya", which "at the request of many" once again prints a photograph of the Soewondo family, writes among other things that Soekarno's private affairs influence Soekarno as president. Indonesian women have been fighting for decades for the rights of women with regard to marriage, so that women are not merely creatures with whom one can marry wildly. The president's latest marriage is a great blow to the women's movement, according to the paper.
The communist-Chinese paper "Sin Po" finally says that worse than polygamy would be the maintaining of extramarital relations.
