Since the Second World War you have lived, under the long control of the American occupation authorities, through days of unprecedented misery. The American imperialists have deprived you of your freedom and independence and of your basic human rights; workers suffer cruel exploitation and receive low wages insufficient to live on, peasants are crushed by forced levies and heavy taxes, and the even more difficult situation of women is well known. For six years American imperialism's attacks on the Japanese people have grown ever more intense; the signing of the so-called "San Francisco Peace Treaty" and the "US-Japan Security Treaty" has hastened Japan along the road of colonisation and war and plunged the Japanese people into an even more miserable situation. The Chinese people and women long suffered the ravages and persecution of imperialism, and therefore hold boundless and deep sympathy for the suffering Japanese people, especially Japanese women and children. The vigorous national and democratic liberation movement the Japanese people have developed has received the strong sympathy and support of the Chinese people and of peace- and democracy-loving people all over the world.
