=== [Page 1] === Secretary-General of the Indonesian Women's Movement Association [Gerwani] talks about the World Congress of Women: firmly opposes the WIDF programme that lacks revolutionary spirit and says she will draw lessons from the congress to strengthen the anti-imperialist struggle Xinhua, Jakarta, 9th: Newspapers here today published a statement to the press by Mrs Masie Siwi [Mashesi Siwei; 玛谢·西维], Secretary-General of the Indonesian Women's Movement Association [Gerwani] and member of the Indonesian women's delegation, who has returned home after attending the World Congress of Women in Moscow. She said that the Indonesian delegation made clear during the congress the delegation's view that the struggle for peace and disarmament cannot be separated from the struggle for national independence and against imperialism and colonialism, because Indonesia's own experience shows that peace will not be fully realised until imperialism headed by the United States, the source of war, is thoroughly eliminated. She said that Gerwani firmly opposes the programme of the Women's International Democratic Federation [WIDF], which lacks revolutionary spirit. She also said she disagreed with the formulations in the Appeal to the Women of the World on questions such as war and peace, peaceful coexistence, disarmament and national independence. She said: 'The unwise, partial and undemocratic attitude adopted by some leaders of the congress often spoiled the atmosphere of the congress.' She said the Indonesian delegation had, from the very start, disagreed with the Indian delegation's raising of the Sino-Indian border question. The Indonesian delegation wrote to the congress leaders about this, but no attention was paid. She made special mention of the joint declaration signed by eighteen Asian and African countries on the initiative of the Indonesian delegation. She pointed out that this declaration expressed opposition to discussion of the Sino-Indian border question raised by the Indian delegation and demanded that the Indian delegation withdraw its speech. She said: 'If the congress leaders had been wise, the ringing of the bell, the turning off of the lights, the switching off of the loudspeakers and other disorderly acts could have been avoided. If the leadership of the congress had understood revolutionary wisdom and flexibility, these breaches of congress order would not have occurred at the Moscow congress. Such things were truly infuriating.' Masie Siwi concluded by saying that Indonesian women will draw all kinds of experience and lessons from this congress in order to strengthen the struggle against imperialism and for world peace.
