=== [Page 1] === The struggle for women's emancipation and family happiness cannot be separated from the struggle for national independence: speech by Mrs Pardjani Pradono, head of the Indonesian women's delegation to China Dear sisters: Allow me, on behalf of the Indonesian women's delegation, to express our very great thanks for your warm and friendly welcome. First of all we thank the All-China Women's Federation very much for inviting us to visit your beautiful country and its heroic, patriotic and hard-working people. We are honoured to have come in person to get to know the people of the People's Republic of China, especially the women, and to learn of their heroic struggle. Our delegation is composed of women from the various streams of Indonesia: Mrs Leimena, wife of Indonesia's First Deputy Prime Minister Leimena and adviser to the Indonesian Christian Women's Association; Mrs Satriyo [Satrijo], wife of the Deputy Governor of East Java, one of the leaders of the East Java branch of the Indonesian Women's Movement Association [Gerwani], and chairwoman of the Surabaya Federation of Women's Organisations; Mrs Li Quanxin, leader of the women's section of the Indonesian Consultative Body for Citizenship [Baperki]; Miss Herinuti, Secretary-General of the Indonesian Women's Association; Mrs Muninggar, member of the committee of the East Java branch of Gerwani; and Miss Catharina Leimena. But we are of one heart and common purpose: our visit to your country is to strengthen the friendship between the people of the People's Republic of China and the Indonesian people, and to strengthen the solidarity of our two peoples in the common anti-imperialist struggle. We wish to express in person the thanks of us Indonesian women to all of you, for always supporting and encouraging our arduous anti-imperialist struggle, and most recently for supporting our recovery of West Irian, Indonesia's legitimate territory, into the embrace of the Republic of Indonesia. At present the struggle of the Indonesian people to eliminate the remnants of imperialism and feudalism is developing day by day. Under the leadership of President Sukarno, through the national united front with Nasakom as its core, and with the Indonesian Political Manifesto and Economic Declaration as the guiding principles, the Indonesian people are now striving to eliminate completely the remnants of imperialism and feudalism and to realise a socialist society as the direction of development of the Republic of Indonesia. We Indonesian people increasingly recognise that a socialist society will guarantee the people, especially women, a happy life. From the experience of us Indonesian women we know that the struggle for women's emancipation and family happiness cannot be separated from the struggle for national independence. As long as imperialism exists in the world, the peoples of the world cannot enjoy happiness. President Sukarno has pointed out again that our country is at present encircled by the danger of neo-colonialism directed by US and British imperialism. The SEATO military bloc still threatens the security of our country. But the imperialists and old and new colonialists are not yet satisfied; they are using a new form of colonialism, the plan to set up 'Greater Malaysia', to exert pressure on the Republic of Indonesia. Faced with these provocations by the imperialists, the line of struggle of the Indonesian people is very clear. The line laid down by President Sukarno and adopted by the Provisional People's Consultative Congress of the Republic of Indonesia is: in order to complete thoroughly the August Revolution of the Republic of Indonesia, the Republic of Indonesia must rely on the strength of the Indonesian people themselves, and realise it with the support and assistance of the countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America, the socialist countries and the peace-loving peoples of the whole world. President Sukarno calls these forces the New Emerging Forces. The aim of the first stage of the Indonesian people's revolution, as laid down in the Political Manifesto that we are now carrying out, is to eliminate the remnants of imperialism and feudalism; the second stage is to establish a socialist society without oppression of man by man or exploitation of man by man. Our delegation has visited two great socialist countries, the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China. After visiting these socialist countries we are even more convinced that the revolutionary line of the Indonesian people, which has become the direction of development of the Republic of Indonesia, is correct. In Beijing we visited women's and children's welfare institutions and saw that the people, women and children of Beijing are truly living a happy life, a happy life that is the result of the arduous, heroic and active struggle of the Chinese people. Everything we saw in your country shows the greatness of the socialist social system; only such a just society, in which all phenomena of man oppressing man and man exploiting man have been eliminated, can guarantee the realisation of true women's rights and the happiness of children. Therefore we firmly believe that imperialism and all systems of oppression and exploitation are the main source of suffering for peoples, women and children. At the World Congress of Women we also stated these views of ours. Our delegation proposed to the congress that the struggle for women's rights, children's happiness, world peace and disarmament cannot be separated from the struggle for national independence and against imperialism and old and new colonialism. Because the personal experience of the Indonesian people has proved that, if the source of war, imperialism headed by US imperialism, is not completely eliminated, world peace cannot be realised. The Chinese women's delegation and the delegations of other anti-imperialist and peace-loving peoples have the same view. Therefore our delegates regretted the programme of the Women's International Democratic Federation that does not contain a revolutionary soul. Therefore we do not agree with this programme. In addition, what caused us great regret was that some leaders of the congress adopted an unwise, partial, undemocratic attitude that spoiled the atmosphere of the congress. From the very beginning of the congress, the Indonesian delegation opposed the Indian women's delegation raising the Sino-Indian border question at the congress, because we consider that this congress is not the place to settle this question, which should be settled by the two governments concerned, and that the purpose of the congress was to unite women of the whole world to struggle against the common enemy, imperialism, for full democracy, the rights of women and children, national independence and world peace. But our statement was not taken seriously at all by the congress leaders. On the initiative of the Indonesian delegation, eighteen Asian and African countries issued a joint statement opposing the Indian delegation's proposal that the congress discuss the Sino-Indian border question. Dear sisters, to the Chinese women's delegation, for the firm anti-imperialist and truth-upholding stand it showed at the congress, we once again pay our highest respects, and we salute the entire heroically fighting Chinese people. Long live the solidarity of the anti-imperialist, peace-loving peoples of the whole world!
