Mrs Katawinata says there can be no peaceful coexistence with imperialism; Indonesia's six million women volunteers are ready to fight at any time
Xinhua News Agency, Jakarta, 6th – From our correspondent: On the eve of International Women's Day (8 March), the wife of Arudji Kartawinata [Arudji Kartawinata], Speaker of the Indonesian Mutual Cooperation Parliament and adviser to the headquarters of the Indonesian women volunteers, told a Xinhua News Agency correspondent: "There can be no peaceful coexistence with imperialism. Indonesian women volunteers are ready at any time to deal with the imperialist aggressors." She also said: "We love peace, but we love independence more. If imperialism and old and new colonialism dare to impose a war of aggression on us, we shall resist heroically until the last drop of our blood is shed!" From 1945 to 1948 she had commanded a famous Indonesian women's detachment of 300 people, which fought British imperialists heroically in the jungle near Bandung in West Java.
On 11 February, at a workers' rally in Jakarta in support of President Sukarno's decision to withdraw from the United Nations, President Sukarno asked the women volunteers in green uniforms to come up onto the platform in turn and asked them: "If imperialism invades the Republic, what will your attitude be?" The first to come onto the platform was Mrs Kartini Radjasa [Katini Rajasa], one of the leaders of the Indonesian Women's Congress. She answered in a ringing voice: "I am prepared to sacrifice myself!" Three other women volunteers followed, answering firmly: "I am determined to go to the battlefield and kill the enemy side by side with the men!" This was not only their voice but a powerful warning to US-led imperialism from the nearly six million Indonesian women who had already registered as volunteers.
To oppose the stepped-up political and economic pressure and military threats imposed on Indonesia by US imperialism, since President Sukarno called on 16 March last year for a "volunteers' movement", six million Indonesian women have eagerly registered as volunteers. Among them are workers, peasants, students, doctors, teachers, office workers, housewives, and the wives of cabinet ministers and of the commanders of the navy, army, air force and police. Many of them took part in resisting Dutch and Japanese imperialist aggression, the defence of Surabaya against the British, and the struggle to liberate West Irian, and rendered meritorious service to the motherland. Over the past year women volunteers scattered across Jakarta and the islands of Bali, Sulawesi, Sumatra, Lombok and Java have, under the leadership of local governments and military commands, actively taken part in military training in first aid, parachuting, swimming, river crossing and shooting. Indonesian women volunteers have taken part heroically in the surging anti-US struggle sweeping the country. They joined the ranks of those taking over the US Information Service buildings in Jakarta, Makassar, Surabaya, Yogyakarta and Medan, and the American rubber plantations in North Sumatra. They have also gone onto the streets, in front of the building of the US diplomatic mission in Indonesia, angrily shouting slogans such as "Hands off Vietnam!" and "Yankee, go home!" Kartinah Kurdi [Kartinah Kurdi], Deputy Secretary-General of the Indonesian Women's Movement Association [Gerwani] and a leader of the women volunteers, said recently to a Xinhua News Agency correspondent: "If imperialism attacks our motherland, we, as leaders of the Gerwani volunteers, will take up arms at any time and lead our women volunteers to the battlefield once more."
