Suharto's radio speech and statements announce that he has taken over the leadership of the army; he states that the September 30th Movement must be completely eliminated; demands the clearing out of Air Force personnel implicated in the September 30th Movement
Radio Republik Indonesia broadcast on the 1st the radio speech made on the radio by Major-General Suharto, acting leader of the National Army of the Republic of Indonesia, the full text of which follows:
"Listeners throughout the country, from Sabang to Merauke: As already announced, on 1 October 1965 an event of a counter-revolutionary movement calling itself the 'September 30th Movement' occurred in Jakarta. On 1 October 1965 they kidnapped several senior army officers, namely: 1. Lieutenant-General Ahmad Yani, 2. Major-General Suprapto, 3. Major-General Parman, 4. Major-General Harjono, 5. Brigadier-General Pandjaitan, 6. Brigadier-General Sutojo. They were able to force the use of Radio Republik Indonesia in Jakarta and the Jakarta central telecommunications office in order to carry out their activities of distorting the situation. Here we need to announce to all the Indonesian people at home and abroad that His Excellency the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces Bung Karno, and His Excellency the Coordinating Minister and Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Nasution are safe and in good health. Listeners, at present the situation both at the centre and in the regions has been brought under our control, and the army is at present united. The leadership of the army is temporarily in my hands. There is mutual understanding and cooperation between the army, the Indonesian Navy and the Indonesian police force, who are determined to stamp out the counter-revolutionary movement launched by the self-styled 'September 30th Movement'. Dear compatriots, the so-called 'September 30th Movement' formed what they call an 'Indonesian Revolutionary Council', took over state power from His Excellency the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Great Leader of the Revolution Bung Karno, or what is generally called carrying out a coup, and discarded the 'two People's Mandates' cabinet as a caretaker cabinet. In addition they kidnapped several senior army officers. Listeners, therefore their action is clearly a counter-revolutionary action that must be completely eliminated. We believe that, with the support of the progressive and revolutionary masses, the counter-revolutionary 'September 30th' movement will surely be crushed by us, and that the national unity of the Republic of Indonesia on the basis of the Pancasila will continue to be victorious under the leadership of our beloved His Excellency the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Great Leader of the Revolution Bung Karno. We hope that the whole of society will remain calm, vigilant, watchful and firm. We pray for the protection of Almighty God, that His Excellency the President, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Great Leader of the Revolution Bung Karno will always be under His protection. We shall certainly be victorious and they will certainly be destroyed, because we always fight on the basis of the Pancasila and under the protection of Almighty God. Thank you."

Radio Republik Indonesia, in the early morning of the 3rd, after broadcasting President Sukarno's radio speech, went on to broadcast the following statement read by Major-General Suharto himself:
"Honoured brothers and sisters! According to what we have all heard on the radio and learned from the newspapers about the order of His Excellency the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Great Leader of the Revolution, I, Major-General Suharto, who have held all leadership of the army since the 30 September 1965 affair, declare: from now on the leadership of the army is held directly by His Excellency the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. His Excellency the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, has also entrusted me with the task of restoring security as it was before. If God allows, I shall be able to carry out this task well. While I held the temporary leadership of the army in order to restore security, I was assisted by all members of the army and other members of the armed forces who are loyal to the revolution, loyal to the 'Seven Principles' [Sapta Marga] and the 'Soldier's Oath' [Sumpah Prajurit] and loyal to the 'Fighting Doctrine of the Indonesian National Army' – the 'Three Sacred Promises' [Tri Ubaya Cakti]; for this I express my utmost gratitude. In restoring normal conditions I also received the attention and great help of society; for this I express my utmost gratitude. Forward always, never retreat. Thank you!"

Radio Republik Indonesia on the evening of the 4th broadcast the following radio speech made by Major-General Suharto at Lubang Buaya on the 4th:
"Today – 4 October 1965 – we first saw with our own eyes the excavation of the bodies of our generals, namely six generals and one junior officer, buried in an old well. As you know, these generals and junior officer of ours have become victims of the savage action carried out by the adventurists calling themselves the 'September 30th Movement'. The place we saw was Lubang Buaya, and this Lubang Buaya area lies within the area of Halim airfield. If you have also seen the fact that the vicinity of that well had become a volunteer training centre run by the Air Force, with the participation of activist members of the People's Youth and the Indonesian Women's Movement Association [Gerwani]; they may have been carrying out national-defence military training at that base. But, according to the members of Gerwani who were trained there and are currently under arrest in Cirebon [Tjirebon], they were people who came from Central Java, far from that area. Therefore, on the basis of the above facts, what the President-Uncle [Bung Karno; 'Pak Karno'] whom we all love, the Supreme Commander and Great Leader, said about the Air Force not being implicated in this affair may be right in some respects, but it is impossible that individual members of the Air Force had nothing to do with this affair. Therefore, as a member of the army, I appeal to the hearts of the patriots among the members of the Air Force: if there are indeed individuals implicated in the cruel murder of our innocent generals, I hope that the patriots among the Air Force members will clear out those Air Force members who are implicated in this adventure. I am extremely grateful to God, who has in the end given us the clearest guidance: any improper action and any bad action will surely be destroyed. I express thanks to the assault regiment of the Army Command [RPKAD/Army Para-Commando Regiment], the marines and other units, and to the people, who assisted in discovering, identifying and transporting these bodies and enabled us to find all the victims. That is what we wanted to explain to you. Thank you!"
