At enterprises and educational institutions of our republic, representatives of India, Afghanistan and other countries do practical training and study. [Photo by Yu. Voronov.] Nikita Sergeyevich, with a view to further strengthening economic ties, advised the Indonesians to adopt the experience of the Tajik cotton growers and the Azerbaijani oil workers, and in turn proposed that we learn from the farmers of Indonesia how to grow new kinds of subtropical crops. U Nu and Sukarno told us that they remember Baku well. In recent years the ties of Azerbaijan with foreign countries have expanded especially, first of all with the states of Asia and Africa. During the trip I was particularly interested in the question of the position of women in the countries of the East. For their part, women representatives of these countries asked how their friends live in Azerbaijan. The conversations in Djakarta especially remain in my memory. Here the culture section of the economic council is headed by Mrs Subandrio, an active public figure. The largest progressive organisation of Indonesian women, "Gerwani", with hundreds of thousands of members, is led by Mrs Umi Sardjono. The aim of this organisation is the struggle for the equality of women, against the wrong attitude towards them, against polygamy, for drawing them into the social and political life of the country. "Gerwani" has produced from its midst many public figures. In India I spoke at a meeting of the women's council in the city of Bhilai. The women's council unites the wives of Indian and Soviet specialists and carries out considerable cultural and educational work. A children's music school, a choir and a dance circle have been set up. It was very touching to see how Indian and Soviet mothers and their children live as one family. A concert performed by Indian and Soviet children rang out as a symbol of friendship. During these and other meetings I told about the position of Azerbaijani women. My friends found the hard fate of the Azerbaijani woman in the past close and understandable. When I told how in the first years of Soviet power, in the famous Baku club named after Ali Bayramov, passionate speeches sounded on the equality [of women ...] [Unrelated fragment about the Geneva talks:] "...[could not] be rejected," [they] declared that during the talks now taking place in Geneva on the banning of nuclear tests many questions would be asked in order to clarify the Soviet proposal. These officials declared that they were satisfied that the Russians had accepted the proposal put forward by the United States in Geneva on 11 February to ban all nuclear tests except small underground explosions that are hard to distinguish from earthquakes. But they need time to study the condition set by the Soviet Union, namely that even such underground tests be suspended on the basis of a gentlemen's agreement. The Soviet proposal is very similar to the pre[vious ...]
