Page #343 Eenvari ahca INTENSIFICATION URGED IN THE TRAINING OF VOLUNTEER WOMEN Following is a translation of an article by Kartinah Kurdi which apperead in the Indonesian language newspaper Harian Rakiat (People's Daily), Djakarta, 27 September 1965, page 3.J The active part played by Gerwani / Gerakan Wanita Indonesia; Indonesian Women's Movement, through the Sukwati (volunteer women, movement in making Dwikora (Dwi-Komando Rakjat; Two-Fold Command by the People, slogan coined by President Sukarno a success cannot be denied. Since the President gave the Dwikora order, Gerwani has warmly welcomed it, and all Gerwani cadre and members have constantly increased in their fighting zeal. Along with other women's Manipol / Manifesto Politik; Political Manifesto organizations associated with KOWANI ( Kongres Wanita Indonesia; Indonesian Women's Congress/ the Gerwani has operated through the National Front and has repeatedly demonstrated its preparedness. The participation of women in the Sukwati movement proves the alertness and progress of Indonesian women, who with great enthusiasm take responsibility in fully achieving the goals of the Revolution of August 1945. This zeal to serve the people must be preserved and encouraged. 12 Page #344 For its continuation the DPP / Central Leadership Council of Gerwani will provide the necessary guidance and direction for the future duties of the Sukwati. Just after the first Dwikora command was issued, the Gerwani proceeded with its first Training Center, which was established in Djakarta with the"Kartini" forces. A national "Tavip" force was also established. The success of these TC programs is a result of good cooperation by all progressive revolutionary groups and of assistance from Nasakom Nasionalis, Agama, Komunis; Nationalism, Religion, Communism/ groups. Such assistance is very meaningful in strengthening close cooperation. In cooperation with other people's organizations, the Gerwani DPP participates in the Training Center directed by Tiswati Yaja, which has played a large part in guiding and intensifying the training of Gerwani volunteer women. When this central Training Center was completed, others were also established in the provinces. The results of the provincial Training Centers have been extremely gratifying. At the 15th Anniversary Celebration of Gerwani, a great rally was held at the province level (Area Level I), at Area Level II, and at the lowest levels. At this rally the readiness of the Gerwani to receive any duty whatsoever was evident, whether national or international, in defending the NEFO (New Emerging Forces and resisting the OLDEFO Old Established Forces/. Because Gerwani is convinced, as has been emphasized by the President and by the First Vice Premier, that the Nekolim (Neo-Kolonialis, Kolonialis, Imperialis; Neo-Colonialists, Colonialists, Imperialists/ may attack Indonesia at any time, as they 13 Page #345 have in Vietnam, The Congo, and the Dominican Republic, we are driven to increasing our alertness and maintaining our preparedness. Although not all the Gerwani volunteer women have uniforms and equipment, their preparedness is not lacking. Even though they do not have uniform dress, they have the more important aspect of three-fold unity: one philosophy, one idealogy, and one future. These were evident at a place in Central Java, where a certain mother, with a baby in her arms and a child slung on her back, walked 17 km. to participate in a rally to declare her readiness to perform her duty and to obey the commands of the Gerwani DPP. Another example was the women volunteers from the areas of Wonogiri and Prajumantoro, who marched barefoot for a distance of at least 40 km. Their faces showed their readiness to defend their homeland and to save the revolution from the Nekolim, the oppressors of the world, and from the oppressors of our farmers. They demonstrated their readiness to continue the confrontation against Malaysia. With such simple things that they have, and not hindered by their lack of proper uniforms, the Gerwani volunteer women are always ready to learn from the experience of other revolutionary progressives and to prepare themselves in accordance with their Gerwani oath. In view of all these things, volunteer women must carry out the instructions of the Gerwani DPP to intensify training, in order to render as much service as possible to the people of their own localities, to cooperate with volunteer women from other organizations, and to aid the security of their localities by cooperation with military and police 14 Page #346 officials down to the village and rural levels. Although their fighting zeal is increasing, the Gerwani DPP again emphasizes that the activities of the volunteer women must not be separated from those of other similar groups. The Gerwani volunteer corps is not a separate group but remains the responsibility of the organization. You must carry on with training in the instruction already received, primarily for the needs "behind the lines", in increasing food production and in intensifying the "1001 Movement" through organizing collective gardens, for example. You must further intensify training in PPPK and PK, as well as in other skills, including firefighting, managing public kitchens, and the use of weapons. It is important for Gerwani volunteers from farming areas not to leave daily duties in increasing food production after they have received their training. Do not think that after entering training in the Training Centers of the Gerwani or other organizations you may leave the basic work of production. This is in accord with Law No. 9, 1964, concerning the Volunteer Movement, to the effect that volunteers who do not have further assignments are not permitted to leave their work in production. In view of all this, again I call upon all volunteer women and all Gerwani members and cadre to intensify your training, to increase your service to the people, and to obey fully the instructions of the DPP. I call upon you to intensify your service and activities in your villages and in your homes. Your devotion is needed. 6942 CSO: 3570-D END 15 Page #347 her ages DPP Wason DS501 4587+JPRS: 33,263 10 December 1965 800tyse o badarida TRANSLATIONS ON SOUTH AND EAST ASIA No. 104 65-33838 bne U.
