=== [PDF page 2] === "Appeal for Solidarity with GERWANI and the Women of Indonesia". Notes and translation by Faye Chan from the original German piece "Appell für Solidarität mit GERWANI und den Frauen Indonesiens". The scribbled writing (in Dutch) at the top right corner reads as "Retour aan NVB" (Reply to the NVB). IDFF = Internationale Demokratische Frauenföderation, German for "International Federation of Democratic Women". Better known in English as the Women's International Democratic Front (WIDF). Bürotagung (Büro tagung) der IDFF = Office meeting of the IDFF (WIDF). This particular meeting took place in Berlin, 2-5 June 1966. Appeal for Solidarity with GERWANI and the Women of Indonesia Tens of thousands of Indonesian women have been brutally murdered, languishing in prisons and concentration camps, exposed to torture and barbaric abuse. The senior officials and several thousand members of GERWANI, one of the WIDF-affiliated organisations, were arrested, and we don't know where they are and what they must be suffering. In the course of events, while the whole of Indonesia was in the grip of fear and terror, and the country robbed of any democracy, GERWANI as well as other women's mass organisations were banned. Hundreds and thousands of families have been torn apart and live in grief. The wave of terror unleashed by the Indonesian military reinforces the tensions in Southeast Asia and serves the aggressionist policy of American imperialism in this part of the world. We are convinced that the Indonesian women, true to their tradition of fighting in the past, will overcome all difficulties and ultimately contribute to achieving victory for the restoration of freedom in their country. The office of the WIDF, which met from 2 to 5 June 1966 in Berlin, called on women worldwide, and all women's organisations, to express their deep concern for the situation of their Indonesian sisters. We call for the application of fundamental human rights, the immediate release of GERWANI's members and functionaries who had been arbitrarily arrested and the restoration of the legality of all women's organisations, so that they can continue to work in the best interests of the state, and of women and children. We appeal to all women in the world, and to all those who fight for democracy and progress, peace and freedom, to raise their voices with us, so that this appeal will help end the suffering and grief of the women and people of Indonesia.
