A Traditional Leader in a Time of Change: The Kijaji and Ulama in West Java (PhD thesis, University of Illinois)
A Traditional Leader in a Time of Change: the Kijaji and Ulama in West Java (Horikoshi, 1976)
Hiroko Horikoshi's 1976 University of Illinois anthropology PhD thesis on kijaji and ulama as traditional leaders in a West Java (Priangan, Cipari) Islamic village, covering kinship, rural economy, the life cycle, the ulama as educators and legal experts, and kijaji charisma. It has almost nothing on Gerwani: a single passing mention (p. 100) of a former member of the 'defunct' Communist women's league who diverted irrigation water in the post-Gestapu years, when local police intervened.
“Around p. 100: during the post-Gestapu period 'a woman who had been a member of the defunct Communist women's league, GERWANI' stopped irrigation flowing to one paddy and channelled it to another; local police stepped in.”
