Rape case may fully restore rule of law (Hugh Mabbett on the Sum Kuning case)
Rape case may fully restore rule of law: the Sum Kuning case (Hugh Mabbett, Straits Times, 1970)
The Straits Times, 31 December 1970, p. 10, by Hugh Mabbett: Yogyakarta court acquits 17-year-old egg seller Sum Kuning (Sumarijem), who reported rape by youths from powerful families and was charged with a false report. Police tortured a noodle seller, Trimo, and threatened her with electric torture and an accusation of Gerwani membership in 1965 when she was about 12. Shows the Gerwani label as a threat.
The Straits Times, 31 Desember 1970, hlm.
“p.2: police 'held over her head an accusation that at the time of the communist coup attempt in 1965 — when she was barely 12 years old — she had been a member of Gerwani'.”
