Ekaterina in Java: Soviet delegates and the Gerwani congress
De Nieuwsgier, 7 Aug 1954: a Dutch-Indonesian paper recounts that Russian delegates invited to the Gerwani congress arrived after it ended but toured Java with organisers. Ekaterina Sheveleva's Izvestia report praises roads built by colonisers, laments farmers' primitive tools and notes a women's union meeting at a railway station; the editor mocks the Soviet 'people as authority' claim.
De Nieuwsgier, 7 Agu 1954: surat kabar Belanda-Indonesia menceritakan bahwa delegasi Rusia yang diundang ke kongres Gerwani tiba setelah kongres selesai tetapi berkeliling Jawa bersama panitia. Laporan Ekaterina Sheveleva di Izvestia memuji jalan peninggalan kolonial, menyesali alat tani primitif dan menyebut pertemuan perkumpulan perempuan di stasiun; redaktur mengejek klaim Soviet soal 'rakyat berkuasa'.
“"Russian delegates were also invited to the congress of the Gerwani; they did come only after the congress had already ended, but their presence was nevertheless greatly appreciated by the organisers, who ... travelled across Java with the Russian ladies."”
