The Crescent and the Rising Sun: Indonesian Islam under the Japanese Occupation of Java 1942-45 (Benda, 1955)
Harry J. Benda, The Crescent and the Rising Sun: Indonesian Islam under the Japanese Occupation of Java, 1942-45 (PhD thesis, Cornell, June 1955), on Japanese policy towards Islam, Masjumi and the mass organisations Putera and Hokokai. Gerwani is not mentioned (it was founded after the thesis's period). The only women's-movement item is a footnote on the merger of Putera and Hokokai (about p. 191) crediting Soekanti Soerjotjondro's unpublished paper on Japanese control of the Indonesian women's movement. The OCR is poor.
Harry J. Benda, The Crescent and the Rising Sun: Indonesian Islam under the Japanese Occupation of Java, 1942-45 (disertasi PhD, Cornell, Juni 1955), tentang kebijakan Jepang terhadap Islam, Masyumi, dan organisasi massa Putera dan Hokokai. Kualitas OCR buruk.
“Footnote (c. p. 191): writer gained insight into Japanese control of the Indonesian women's movement from Soekanti Soerjotjondro's unpublished paper.”
